September is FASD Awareness Month: Building Strengths and Abilities

Public Service Announcement

Yellowknife — September 8, 2022

September is Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) awareness month. This time is dedicated to creating conversation about FASD, improving prevention of FASD, and supporting those living with FASD. The theme for this year’s FASD awareness month is Building Strength and Abilities. While it is important to recognize  individuals with FASD will experience challenges, it is essential to recognize and celebrate their talents, strengths, and abilities.

FASD is a diagnostic term used to describe the effects on the brain and body of individuals exposed to alcohol before birth. FASD is a lifelong disability that can present differently in each person and is often invisible. Although those living with FASD may experience challenges in their daily living, each individual is unique and possesses a variety of strengths and abilities to support.

This year, NWT residents can show their support by joining the Red Shoes Rock campaign – an international awareness campaign that brings a voice to those with FASD. Residents are encouraged to rock their red shoes during September and share on social media using the hashtag #RedShoesRockNWT. Don’t have red shoes? Wear red socks, slippers, shoelaces, or paint your toenails red.
